1999 Eclipse Deluxe Print Set
The last total solar eclipse of the Millennium was witnessed by millions of people throughout Europe and the Middle East. Observing from the shore of Lake Hazar, Turkey, Fred Espenak has created a dazzling series of images, which capture all aspects of this extraordinary event. A brief description of each of the seven photographs in the series follows.
Before totality begins, the corona appears during the diamond ring effect. Brilliant, ruby-red prominences shine with laser-like intensity.
A computer enhanced image of the solar corona was created by combining twenty-two separate negatives into a single photograph (see: 1999 Composite Photo). Features on the dark face of the Moon are visible as well as a wealth of subtle details and streamers in the corona.

The eerie twilight sky of totality is seen above of Lake Hazar, Turkey. Espenak and his telescopes are silhouetted against the lake while a time lapse sequence reveals various phases of the eclipse from start to finish.
A dramatic view of totality is seen in a wide-angle photograph shot from Elazig, Turkey. A programmable camera automatically captured the scene from Espenak's hotel in Elazig while he photographed the eclipse 30-km away at Lake Hazar.
The appearance of Baily's beads signals the end of totality. This remarkable sequence of four images reveals the bead's first appearance and their development against a background of spectacular prominences.
At 3rd contact, the diamond ring effect heralds the end of totality. Structure in the corona has been digitally enhanced and the sky background has been adjusted to match the naked eye appearance.
The entire eclipse is captured in a matrix of thirty-five images, taken every five minutes throughout the event. The diamond ring at each contact is included while the corona has been computer enhanced to show subtle details and prominences.
You can now order deluxe 8" x 12" enlargements of these photographs.Each glossy print is made directly from Espenak's original digital files onto photographic paper using a top quality digital printer. This process offers continuous tone photographic output combined with the archival quality of true photographs.
Poster-size enlargements (12" x 18" up to 24" x 36") of the 1999 total solar eclipse are also available.
