Glorious Heavens Astrophoto Print Set
The heavens above have always captured mankind's imagination and filled us with awe. Yet, much of the Universe's beauty remains hidden from us without the use of special tools. Photography is one such tool and can reveal unique celestial vistas hidden from the unaided eye.
Photographing the sky from locations around the world, Fred Espenak has captured the majesty and splendor of the heavens in a stunning set of images. A brief description of each of the six photographs in the series follows.
The brightest comet in decades graced our skies in April 1997. Captured above Virginia's Shenandoah Mountains, the comet's two tails are revealed. The dust tail appears white and is composed of fine particles which reflect sunlight. The gas tail glows with a blue color caused by ionized gases as they evaporate from Hale-Bopp's frozen nucleus.
Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake. At an elevation of 12,500 feet, its dark sky offers a superb location for capturing the heavens on film. The stars and southern Milky Way spiral around the South Celestial Pole and are reflected in the lake during this two hour time exposure.
Red supe rgiant star Antares is enveloped in a vast dust cloud which reflects its reddish color. The hot blue-white star Rho Ophiucus is surrounded by a similar nebula, but the hotter star gives the dust cloud a distinctly blue tint in dramatic contrast to Antares. Globular cluster M4 appears near Antares but it is actally a dozen times further away from us and is composed of thousands of individual stars.
A grand nebula surrounds the perplexing explosive star Eta Carina. Visible to the naked eye the nebula glows in the red light of hydrogen gas.Eta Carina and its nebula lie approximately 3500 light years from Earth.
The most recognizable constellation in the southern hemisphere has to be the Crux the Southern Cross. Embedded in the bright southern Milky Way, Crux contains the large distinct Coal Sack nebula which is visible to the naked eye. To the east of Crux are the bright stars Alpha and Beta Centaurii, while to the west is the awesome red Eta Carina nebula.
On a clear dark night far from city lights, you can just make out the fuzzy glow of Andromeda. This galaxy lies some 2.2 million light years from us and is one of the most distant objects visible to the naked eye. A time exposure through a five inch telescope reveals the galaxy's spiral arms which are composed of hundreds of billions of stars.
