2001 Eclipse Deluxe Print Set
The first total solar eclipse of the New Millennium occurred in southern Africa. Observing from Chisamba, Zambia , Fred Espenak has produced a compelling series of images, which capture all aspects of this extraordinary event. A brief description of each of the nine photographs in the series follows.
The appearance of Baily's beads presages the start of totality. This amazing sequence of five images shows the Sun's crescent breaking up into a series of beads which quickly vanish against a background of spectacular prominences.
Seconds before totality begins, the corona appears during the diamond ring effect. Brilliant, ruby-red prominences shine with laser-like intensity.
Nine photos were combined into a sequence showing the various phases of the eclipse.
Twenty-two separate negatives were computer processed and combined to create an image which captures the visual appearance of the corona as closly as possible. (see: 2001 Composite Photo).
Also available as Deluxe 11"x14" and 16"x20" Prints .
Two cameras were used to create this dramtic view of the eclipse above Chisamba, Zambia. One camera captured totality and a thorn acacia tree while the second camera recorded the partial phases through a solar filter.
A computer enhanced image of the solar corona was created by combining twenty-two separate negatives into a single photograph (see: 2001 Composite Photo). Features on the dark face of the Moon are visible as well as a wealth of subtle details and streamers in the corona.
The entire eclipse is captured in a matrix of thirty-five images, taken approximately every five minutes throughout the event. The diamond ring at each contact is included while the corona has been computer enhanced to show subtle details and prominences.
At 3rd contact, the diamond ring effect heralds the end of totality. Structure in the corona has been digitally enhanced and the sky background has been adjusted to match the naked eye appearance.
The eerie twilight of totality is seen in a wide-angle photograph shot from Chisamba, Zambia. A programmable camera automatically photographed the scene while Espenak operated two telescopes nearby.
